The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is an informational security standard put into place by the Payment Card Industry Security Council. The standard applies to any organization involved in the processing of credit card information.


The Payment Card Industry Security Council was formed in 2004 by the five major credit card brands.

PCI DSS (or PCI for short) is made up of 3 key areas:

PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA DSS) PIN Entry Device Security Requirements (PED)
Primary focus:  Merchants and processors. Primary focus:  Software developers for payment applications. Primary focus:  Payment card device manufacturers.
